War Stories

from Fish Stories Disk II by Chris Nelson

about

This track, although written in 1987 was never successfully recorded until 2009 shortly before I started the sessions for "Nightfall" and the track is very experimental. I put the acoustic guitar through a phase shifter, which I don't think has ever been done before. The drum beat was a compromise, and I didn't have real drums at my disposal when I made this recording. Still, I think it's a good track. It was on my web site for a little while and got a few "likes" and some comments. The song itself is about the sacrifice a family makes when they've lost their loved one to war.

lyrics

See this picture that hangs upon my wall?
It serves a purpose to inform
Feel the memory that lingers much too long
starts me straying from the norm
Mother cries when she remembers the time
an expensive price to pay
And we all wonder, when they write their articles
what do they leave us to say?

{Are there any reasons for the changing of the seasons?}

I hear the story, time and time again
It never fails to be told
For some strange reason, I deny it all
maybe I'm just too old
Why must I be tortured in notoriety?
My cover's always blown
I can't blame God for taking the children away
but must I be alone?

{Are there any reasons for the changing of the seasons?}

They gave their lives for a cause that's all too great
I only wish that it was me
No war stories can fill this house again
what is was meant to be
With a shiny medal and a flag upon his grave
Sacrificed for a cause
There can be no vengeance, and loss is only beared
in the midst of a hero's applause...

{Are there any reasons for the changing of the seasons?}
